Family Luxury with a Side of Room Service: Our Stay at The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta

If you’ve ever wondered whether a luxury hotel like The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta can work for a family of five, let me tell you—it absolutely can. Usually, when we travel as a family we go for comfort and convenience over white-glove service. But this last-minute trip to Atlanta turned into the perfect chance to treat ourselves. And thanks to a few strategic credit card perks, we got the chance to enjoy a little bit of luxury without the big price tag.

Using AMEX Benefits to Maximize Value

When our family decided to visit Atlanta at the last minute (thanks to a nearby sports competition we were attending that weekend), I knew I wanted to book a room using the Fine Hotels + Resorts® collection via American Express Travel®. My Platinum Card® by American Express features a $200 annual statement credit on eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or Hotel Collection bookings. So, when I found a last-minute rate at the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta for $350 after tax, I made a reservation.

My Amex Platinum benefit also unlocked some other solid perks for our overnight stay including:

  • $100 property credit
  • Complimentary daily breakfast for two (up to $80 value at the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta)
  • Early check-in at 12:00 PM (when available)
  • Guaranteed 4:00 PM late check out (which we didn’t use)
  • Possible room upgrade

Unfortunately, the room upgrade wasn’t available because the hotel was fully booked. But we were able to check in early. I used the $100 credit to cover most of our valet parking which cost $70 before tips. We applied the remaining property credit toward room service that evening. And it didn’t disappoint. (I’ll share more about the food below.)

On top of the property perks, I used the $200 Amex Platinum Hotel Credit to lower the cost of our stay which was $350 after tax. (I received the credit the next day. But the American Express website says the statement credit can take up to 90 days to post to your Card account.)

I also paid for the part of our stay that I wouldn’t be reimbursed for ($150) using around 10,000 Membership Rewards® points. The rewards value wasn’t the best because I only got a redemption rate of 1.5 cents per Membership Reward point. (Amex points are typically worth at least 2 cents per points, and better redemptions may be available when you transfer to travel partners.) But for a nearly free stay in a luxury hotel near the Georgia Aquarium, it was a good deal—especially on such short notice.

The Ritz Experience: Warm, Welcoming, and Surprisingly Kid-Friendly

When we arrived at the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta, the staff did a great job making our family feel welcome. The valet helped with our baggage and offered umbrellas for our walk to the Georgia Aquarium—very thoughtful.

At check-in, the receptionist greeted my husband and I with glasses of champagne. Meanwhile, the kids were delighted to receive sweet treats and bottles of water. These little touches made a great first impression and set a nice tone for our stay.

Later that evening, after a long day exploring the Georgia Aquarium, we came back to find fresh flowers and a fruit plate waiting for us with turndown service. Those little luxury moments remind you why places like The Ritz are so well-loved.

Room Review: Clean, Comfortable… But Not Quite 5-Star Wow

Now, let’s talk about the room. While the service and food were exceptional, I have to say the room itself was not what I expected from a 5-stay hotel.

To be fair, the room was clean and cool with a lovely view. But I’ve stayed in numerous mid-range properties with more modern finishes. And the restroom certainly didn’t contain any of the spa-like features I’ve enjoyed during my stays at other 5-star establishments.

That said, housekeeping did a wonderful job keeping everything spotless, and we were comfortable the entire time. Just know that if you’re booking with ultra-high luxury expectations, the rooms may not be the standout feature here.

Dining: Room Service That Delivers

One of the highlights of our stay was, without question, the food. We ordered room service twice—once for dinner and again for breakfast. And both meals were top-tier.

For dinner, my husband and I tried the braised short ribs with broccolini. They were tender and tasty—with more than enough to share. The kids went for cheese and pepperoni pizzas, and they loved them.

The next morning, we went all in on breakfast. Our order included the Georgia Omelet (with toast and breakfast potatoes), buttermilk pancakes, applewood bacon, and a seasonal fruit bowl. We had a feast, and everything was super fresh and delicious. It was a great way to start the day without having to drag three kids down to a restaurant early in the morning before checkout and a roadtrip.

On-Site Dining & Drinks

As mentioned, we stuck to room service during our short stay. But the hotel has some nice dining options I would have enjoyed exploring as well.

  • AG – The hotel’s signature restaurant serves savory Southern food with a modern take and has a nice overall vibe.
  • Lumen Bar – This chic lobby bar is a stylish spot for drinks and live music.
  • Jittery Joe’s – The hotel’s coffee shop is located in the lobby for quick breakfast bites and good coffee when you’re in a hurry.

If we didn’t have kids with us, I could see myself enjoying a quiet drink at Lumen or a nice dinner at AG. I’d love to come back for a weekend getaway or a trip with friends sometime in the future.

Final Thoughts: Is the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta a Good Choice for Families?

While The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta might not be the first hotel you think of when traveling with kids, it turned out to be a surprisingly good fit. The location was convenient for walking to the Georgia Aquarium. Plus, the added perks from my Platinum Card from American Express made the stay luxurious and cost-effective.

The room itself didn’t wow me. But I appreciated that everything was clean and tidy. Meanwhile, the exceptional service, delicious food, and thoughtful touches left a great impression.

Would I stay here again with kids? Possibly. But I’d definitely consider booking again for a romantic getaway, a business trip, or a friend’s weekend. For families who are looking to elevate a trip to Atlanta without completely blowing the budget, this is a property that checks a lot of boxes—especially if you’ve got the right credit card in your wallet.
